Senate Passes Mercury Bill

The
Massachusetts Senate has voted unanimously to pass legislation to stop mercury
pollution from products such as thermostats, automobiles, fluorescent lights,
and electrical switches. S-2464, "An Act Relative to Mercury
Management," will phase out the use of certain mercury-containing products
that have safer alternatives and will require manufacturers to set up
collection programs to keep discarded products out of the waste stream.

Parents Plead for School Aid

Pam Resor and Rep. Geoff Hall said there were at least four proposals on the
table to change the formula for Chapter 70 state aid: the governor's proposal,
which considers the proportion of school-age children in a community; the
League of Women Voters' proposal, a simplified, straightforward formula, which
Resor said would be a "great change" and provide more funding to
communities around the Interstate-495 belt; the Mass. Teachers Association
proposal that would significantly increase the foundation budget; and the Acton
initiative, that sets a minimum floor of $1,500 state aid per pupil.

Doctors, Politicians Partner for
Skin Screening

Dermatologists
conducted free skin cancer screenings recently at the State House in Boston. One hundred
legislators and staff, many of whom had never been examined before by a
dermatologist or used a face screening machine, attended the screening. The
free event was hosted by state Sen. Pam Resor, D-Acton, and Sen. James E.
Timility, D-Walpole, in conjunction with the Massachusetts Melanoma Foundation
and Massachusetts Academy of Dermatology.

Northeast US Clean Air Pact gets Renewed Push

A pact signed
by seven Northeastern U.S. states to regionally
control greenhouse gases is getting a renewed push in Massachusetts by Pamela Resor, a Democratic state
Senator and chair of a Joint Committee on the Environment, Natural Resources
and Agriculture. Resor has filed legislation that would include Massachusetts in the
pact regardless of Governor Romney’s refusal.
